How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5
  2. Multiply: 0.5 × 5 = 2.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.5 ÷ 5 × 100 = 50%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 50/100 = part/5, so part = 50 × 5 ÷ 100 = 2.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =50%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.5 is the 50% share of 5. The remaining 50% is 2.5, and the two parts add back up to 5.

Discounts: 50% off an item priced $5 saves $2.5, so you pay $2.5.

Adding and taking away 50%

Increasing 5 by 50% gives 7.5 and decreasing it by 50% gives 2.5. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 50% and then lowering the result by 50% ends at 3.75, because the second 50% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 5% of 50. 50% of 5 and 5% of 50 are always equal (both are 50 × 5 ÷ 100 = 2.5), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
