How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 83 = 8.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 8.3 ÷ 83 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/83, so part = 10 × 83 ÷ 100 = 8.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*83. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

8.3 is the 10% share of 83. The remaining 90% is 74.7, and the two parts add back up to 83.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $83 saves $8.3, so you pay $74.7.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 83 by 10% gives 91.3 and decreasing it by 10% gives 74.7. These do not cancel out: raising 83 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 82.17, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
