How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 10 = 4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4 ÷ 10 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/10, so part = 40 × 10 ÷ 100 = 4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4 is the 40% share of 10. The remaining 60% is 6, and the two parts add back up to 10.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $10 saves $4, so you pay $6.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 10 by 40% gives 14 and decreasing it by 40% gives 6. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 8.4, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
