How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 86 = 8.6
- Check: Work backwards: 8.6 ÷ 86 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/86, so part = 10 × 86 ÷ 100 = 8.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*86. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
8.6 is the 10% share of 86. The remaining 90% is 77.4, and the two parts add back up to 86.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $86 saves $8.6, so you pay $77.4.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 86 by 10% gives 94.6 and decreasing it by 10% gives 77.4. These do not cancel out: raising 86 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 85.14, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 86% of 10. 10% of 86 and 86% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 86 ÷ 100 = 8.6), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
