How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 11 ÷ 100 = 0.11
  2. Multiply: 0.11 × 25 = 2.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.75 ÷ 25 × 100 = 11%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 11/100 = part/25, so part = 11 × 25 ÷ 100 = 2.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =11%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.75 is the 11% share of 25. The remaining 89% is 22.25, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 11% off an item priced $25 saves $2.75, so you pay $22.25.

Adding and taking away 11%

Increasing 25 by 11% gives 27.75 and decreasing it by 11% gives 22.25. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 11% and then lowering the result by 11% ends at 24.6975, because the second 11% is taken of a bigger number.
