How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 47 = 5.64
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.64 ÷ 47 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/47, so part = 12 × 47 ÷ 100 = 5.64. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*47. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.64 is the 12% share of 47. The remaining 88% is 41.36, and the two parts add back up to 47.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $47 saves $5.64, so you pay $41.36.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 47 by 12% gives 52.64 and decreasing it by 12% gives 41.36. These do not cancel out: raising 47 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 46.3232, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
