How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 47 ÷ 100 = 0.47
  2. Multiply: 0.47 × 12 = 5.64
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.64 ÷ 12 × 100 = 47%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 47/100 = part/12, so part = 47 × 12 ÷ 100 = 5.64. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =47%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.64 is the 47% share of 12. The remaining 53% is 6.36, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 47% off an item priced $12 saves $5.64, so you pay $6.36.

Adding and taking away 47%

Increasing 12 by 47% gives 17.64 and decreasing it by 47% gives 6.36. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 47% and then lowering the result by 47% ends at 9.3492, because the second 47% is taken of a bigger number.
