How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 52 = 6.24
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.24 ÷ 52 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/52, so part = 12 × 52 ÷ 100 = 6.24. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*52. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.24 is the 12% share of 52. The remaining 88% is 45.76, and the two parts add back up to 52.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $52 saves $6.24, so you pay $45.76.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 52 by 12% gives 58.24 and decreasing it by 12% gives 45.76. These do not cancel out: raising 52 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 51.2512, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
