How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
- Multiply: 0.12 × 6 = 0.72
- Check: Work backwards: 0.72 ÷ 6 × 100 = 12%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/6, so part = 12 × 6 ÷ 100 = 0.72. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =12%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.72 is the 12% share of 6. The remaining 88% is 5.28, and the two parts add back up to 6.
Discounts: 12% off an item priced $6 saves $0.72, so you pay $5.28.
Adding and taking away 12%
Increasing 6 by 12% gives 6.72 and decreasing it by 12% gives 5.28. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 5.9136, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
