How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 100 = 40
  3. Check: Work backwards: 40 ÷ 100 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/100, so part = 40 × 100 ÷ 100 = 40. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

40 is the 40% share of 100. The remaining 60% is 60, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $100 saves $40, so you pay $60.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 100 by 40% gives 140 and decreasing it by 40% gives 60. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 84, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 100% of 40. 40% of 100 and 100% of 40 are always equal (both are 40 × 100 ÷ 100 = 40), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
