How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 300 = 210
  3. Check: Work backwards: 210 ÷ 300 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/300, so part = 70 × 300 ÷ 100 = 210. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*300. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

210 is the 70% share of 300. The remaining 30% is 90, and the two parts add back up to 300.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $300 saves $210, so you pay $90.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 300 by 70% gives 510 and decreasing it by 70% gives 90. These do not cancel out: raising 300 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 153, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 300% of 70. 70% of 300 and 300% of 70 are always equal (both are 70 × 300 ÷ 100 = 210), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
