How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
- Multiply: 0.12 × 9 = 1.08
- Check: Work backwards: 1.08 ÷ 9 × 100 = 12%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/9, so part = 12 × 9 ÷ 100 = 1.08. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =12%*9. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.08 is the 12% share of 9. The remaining 88% is 7.92, and the two parts add back up to 9.
Discounts: 12% off an item priced $9 saves $1.08, so you pay $7.92.
Adding and taking away 12%
Increasing 9 by 12% gives 10.08 and decreasing it by 12% gives 7.92. These do not cancel out: raising 9 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 8.8704, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
