How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
  2. Multiply: 0.09 × 12 = 1.08
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.08 ÷ 12 × 100 = 9%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/12, so part = 9 × 12 ÷ 100 = 1.08. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =9%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.08 is the 9% share of 12. The remaining 91% is 10.92, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 9% off an item priced $12 saves $1.08, so you pay $10.92.

Adding and taking away 9%

Increasing 12 by 9% gives 13.08 and decreasing it by 9% gives 10.92. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 11.9028, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.
