How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
- Multiply: 0.7 × 90 = 63
- Check: Work backwards: 63 ÷ 90 × 100 = 70%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/90, so part = 70 × 90 ÷ 100 = 63. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =70%*90. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
63 is the 70% share of 90. The remaining 30% is 27, and the two parts add back up to 90.
Discounts: 70% off an item priced $90 saves $63, so you pay $27.
Adding and taking away 70%
Increasing 90 by 70% gives 153 and decreasing it by 70% gives 27. These do not cancel out: raising 90 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 45.9, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
