How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
  2. Multiply: 0.13 × 37 = 4.81
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.81 ÷ 37 × 100 = 13%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/37, so part = 13 × 37 ÷ 100 = 4.81. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =13%*37. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.81 is the 13% share of 37. The remaining 87% is 32.19, and the two parts add back up to 37.

Discounts: 13% off an item priced $37 saves $4.81, so you pay $32.19.

Adding and taking away 13%

Increasing 37 by 13% gives 41.81 and decreasing it by 13% gives 32.19. These do not cancel out: raising 37 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 36.3747, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.
