How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 1 = 0.15
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.15 ÷ 1 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/1, so part = 15 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.15. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.15 is the 15% share of 1. The remaining 85% is 0.85, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $1 saves $0.15, so you pay $0.85.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 1 by 15% gives 1.15 and decreasing it by 15% gives 0.85. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 0.9775, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
