How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
  2. Multiply: 0.8 × 60 = 48
  3. Check: Work backwards: 48 ÷ 60 × 100 = 80%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/60, so part = 80 × 60 ÷ 100 = 48. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =80%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

48 is the 80% share of 60. The remaining 20% is 12, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 80% off an item priced $60 saves $48, so you pay $12.

Adding and taking away 80%

Increasing 60 by 80% gives 108 and decreasing it by 80% gives 12. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 21.6, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.
