How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 15 = 0.15
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.15 ÷ 15 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/15, so part = 1 × 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.15 is the 1% share of 15. The remaining 99% is 14.85, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $15 saves $0.15, so you pay $14.85.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 15 by 1% gives 15.15 and decreasing it by 1% gives 14.85. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 14.9985, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
