How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 28 = 4.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.2 ÷ 28 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/28, so part = 15 × 28 ÷ 100 = 4.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*28. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.2 is the 15% share of 28. The remaining 85% is 23.8, and the two parts add back up to 28.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $28 saves $4.2, so you pay $23.8.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 28 by 15% gives 32.2 and decreasing it by 15% gives 23.8. These do not cancel out: raising 28 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 27.37, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
