How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 29 = 4.35
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.35 ÷ 29 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/29, so part = 15 × 29 ÷ 100 = 4.35. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*29. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.35 is the 15% share of 29. The remaining 85% is 24.65, and the two parts add back up to 29.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $29 saves $4.35, so you pay $24.65.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 29 by 15% gives 33.35 and decreasing it by 15% gives 24.65. These do not cancel out: raising 29 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 28.3475, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
