How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 31 = 4.65
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.65 ÷ 31 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/31, so part = 15 × 31 ÷ 100 = 4.65. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*31. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.65 is the 15% share of 31. The remaining 85% is 26.35, and the two parts add back up to 31.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $31 saves $4.65, so you pay $26.35.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 31 by 15% gives 35.65 and decreasing it by 15% gives 26.35. These do not cancel out: raising 31 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 30.3025, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
