How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 31 ÷ 100 = 0.31
  2. Multiply: 0.31 × 15 = 4.65
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.65 ÷ 15 × 100 = 31%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 31/100 = part/15, so part = 31 × 15 ÷ 100 = 4.65. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =31%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.65 is the 31% share of 15. The remaining 69% is 10.35, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 31% off an item priced $15 saves $4.65, so you pay $10.35.

Adding and taking away 31%

Increasing 15 by 31% gives 19.65 and decreasing it by 31% gives 10.35. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 31% and then lowering the result by 31% ends at 13.5585, because the second 31% is taken of a bigger number.
