How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 32 = 4.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.8 ÷ 32 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/32, so part = 15 × 32 ÷ 100 = 4.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*32. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.8 is the 15% share of 32. The remaining 85% is 27.2, and the two parts add back up to 32.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $32 saves $4.8, so you pay $27.2.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 32 by 15% gives 36.8 and decreasing it by 15% gives 27.2. These do not cancel out: raising 32 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 31.28, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
