How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 39 = 5.85
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.85 ÷ 39 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/39, so part = 15 × 39 ÷ 100 = 5.85. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*39. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.85 is the 15% share of 39. The remaining 85% is 33.15, and the two parts add back up to 39.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $39 saves $5.85, so you pay $33.15.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 39 by 15% gives 44.85 and decreasing it by 15% gives 33.15. These do not cancel out: raising 39 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 38.1225, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
