How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 77 = 11.55
  3. Check: Work backwards: 11.55 ÷ 77 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/77, so part = 15 × 77 ÷ 100 = 11.55. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*77. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

11.55 is the 15% share of 77. The remaining 85% is 65.45, and the two parts add back up to 77.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $77 saves $11.55, so you pay $65.45.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 77 by 15% gives 88.55 and decreasing it by 15% gives 65.45. These do not cancel out: raising 77 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 75.2675, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
