How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 8 = 1.2
- Check: Work backwards: 1.2 ÷ 8 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/8, so part = 15 × 8 ÷ 100 = 1.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*8. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.2 is the 15% share of 8. The remaining 85% is 6.8, and the two parts add back up to 8.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $8 saves $1.2, so you pay $6.8.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 8 by 15% gives 9.2 and decreasing it by 15% gives 6.8. These do not cancel out: raising 8 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 7.82, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
