How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 8 ÷ 100 = 0.08
- Multiply: 0.08 × 15 = 1.2
- Check: Work backwards: 1.2 ÷ 15 × 100 = 8%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 8/100 = part/15, so part = 8 × 15 ÷ 100 = 1.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =8%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.2 is the 8% share of 15. The remaining 92% is 13.8, and the two parts add back up to 15.
Discounts: 8% off an item priced $15 saves $1.2, so you pay $13.8.
Adding and taking away 8%
Increasing 15 by 8% gives 16.2 and decreasing it by 8% gives 13.8. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 8% and then lowering the result by 8% ends at 14.904, because the second 8% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 15% of 8. 8% of 15 and 15% of 8 are always equal (both are 8 × 15 ÷ 100 = 1.2), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
