How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 92 = 13.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 13.8 ÷ 92 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/92, so part = 15 × 92 ÷ 100 = 13.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*92. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

13.8 is the 15% share of 92. The remaining 85% is 78.2, and the two parts add back up to 92.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $92 saves $13.8, so you pay $78.2.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 92 by 15% gives 105.8 and decreasing it by 15% gives 78.2. These do not cancel out: raising 92 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 89.93, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
