How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 55 = 38.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 38.5 ÷ 55 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/55, so part = 70 × 55 ÷ 100 = 38.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*55. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

38.5 is the 70% share of 55. The remaining 30% is 16.5, and the two parts add back up to 55.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $55 saves $38.5, so you pay $16.5.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 55 by 70% gives 93.5 and decreasing it by 70% gives 16.5. These do not cancel out: raising 55 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 28.05, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
