How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 17 ÷ 100 = 0.17
  2. Multiply: 0.17 × 41 = 6.97
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.97 ÷ 41 × 100 = 17%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 17/100 = part/41, so part = 17 × 41 ÷ 100 = 6.97. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =17%*41. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.97 is the 17% share of 41. The remaining 83% is 34.03, and the two parts add back up to 41.

Discounts: 17% off an item priced $41 saves $6.97, so you pay $34.03.

Adding and taking away 17%

Increasing 41 by 17% gives 47.97 and decreasing it by 17% gives 34.03. These do not cancel out: raising 41 by 17% and then lowering the result by 17% ends at 39.8151, because the second 17% is taken of a bigger number.
