How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 18 ÷ 100 = 0.18
- Multiply: 0.18 × 20 = 3.6
- Check: Work backwards: 3.6 ÷ 20 × 100 = 18%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 18/100 = part/20, so part = 18 × 20 ÷ 100 = 3.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =18%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
3.6 is the 18% share of 20. The remaining 82% is 16.4, and the two parts add back up to 20.
Discounts: 18% off an item priced $20 saves $3.6, so you pay $16.4.
Adding and taking away 18%
Increasing 20 by 18% gives 23.6 and decreasing it by 18% gives 16.4. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 18% and then lowering the result by 18% ends at 19.352, because the second 18% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 20% of 18. 18% of 20 and 20% of 18 are always equal (both are 18 × 20 ÷ 100 = 3.6), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
