How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 34 = 0.68
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.68 ÷ 34 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/34, so part = 2 × 34 ÷ 100 = 0.68. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*34. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.68 is the 2% share of 34. The remaining 98% is 33.32, and the two parts add back up to 34.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $34 saves $0.68, so you pay $33.32.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 34 by 2% gives 34.68 and decreasing it by 2% gives 33.32. These do not cancel out: raising 34 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 33.9864, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
