How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 49 = 0.98
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.98 ÷ 49 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/49, so part = 2 × 49 ÷ 100 = 0.98. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*49. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.98 is the 2% share of 49. The remaining 98% is 48.02, and the two parts add back up to 49.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $49 saves $0.98, so you pay $48.02.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 49 by 2% gives 49.98 and decreasing it by 2% gives 48.02. These do not cancel out: raising 49 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 48.9804, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
