How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 49 ÷ 100 = 0.49
  2. Multiply: 0.49 × 2 = 0.98
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.98 ÷ 2 × 100 = 49%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 49/100 = part/2, so part = 49 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.98. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =49%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.98 is the 49% share of 2. The remaining 51% is 1.02, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 49% off an item priced $2 saves $0.98, so you pay $1.02.

Adding and taking away 49%

Increasing 2 by 49% gives 2.98 and decreasing it by 49% gives 1.02. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 49% and then lowering the result by 49% ends at 1.5198, because the second 49% is taken of a bigger number.
