How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 59 = 1.18
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.18 ÷ 59 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/59, so part = 2 × 59 ÷ 100 = 1.18. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*59. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.18 is the 2% share of 59. The remaining 98% is 57.82, and the two parts add back up to 59.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $59 saves $1.18, so you pay $57.82.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 59 by 2% gives 60.18 and decreasing it by 2% gives 57.82. These do not cancel out: raising 59 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 58.9764, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
