How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 59 ÷ 100 = 0.59
  2. Multiply: 0.59 × 2 = 1.18
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.18 ÷ 2 × 100 = 59%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 59/100 = part/2, so part = 59 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.18. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =59%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.18 is the 59% share of 2. The remaining 41% is 0.82, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 59% off an item priced $2 saves $1.18, so you pay $0.82.

Adding and taking away 59%

Increasing 2 by 59% gives 3.18 and decreasing it by 59% gives 0.82. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 59% and then lowering the result by 59% ends at 1.3038, because the second 59% is taken of a bigger number.
