How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 6 = 0.12
- Check: Work backwards: 0.12 ÷ 6 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/6, so part = 2 × 6 ÷ 100 = 0.12. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.12 is the 2% share of 6. The remaining 98% is 5.88, and the two parts add back up to 6.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $6 saves $0.12, so you pay $5.88.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 6 by 2% gives 6.12 and decreasing it by 2% gives 5.88. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 5.9976, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 6% of 2. 2% of 6 and 6% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 6 ÷ 100 = 0.12), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
