How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
  2. Multiply: 0.06 × 2 = 0.12
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.12 ÷ 2 × 100 = 6%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/2, so part = 6 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.12. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =6%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.12 is the 6% share of 2. The remaining 94% is 1.88, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 6% off an item priced $2 saves $0.12, so you pay $1.88.

Adding and taking away 6%

Increasing 2 by 6% gives 2.12 and decreasing it by 6% gives 1.88. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 1.9928, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 6. 6% of 2 and 2% of 6 are always equal (both are 6 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.12), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
