How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 300 = 30
- Check: Work backwards: 30 ÷ 300 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/300, so part = 10 × 300 ÷ 100 = 30. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*300. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
30 is the 10% share of 300. The remaining 90% is 270, and the two parts add back up to 300.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $300 saves $30, so you pay $270.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 300 by 10% gives 330 and decreasing it by 10% gives 270. These do not cancel out: raising 300 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 297, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 300% of 10. 10% of 300 and 300% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 300 ÷ 100 = 30), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
