How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 64 = 1.28
- Check: Work backwards: 1.28 ÷ 64 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/64, so part = 2 × 64 ÷ 100 = 1.28. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*64. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.28 is the 2% share of 64. The remaining 98% is 62.72, and the two parts add back up to 64.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $64 saves $1.28, so you pay $62.72.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 64 by 2% gives 65.28 and decreasing it by 2% gives 62.72. These do not cancel out: raising 64 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 63.9744, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 64% of 2. 2% of 64 and 64% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 64 ÷ 100 = 1.28), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
