How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
- Multiply: 0.2 × 450 = 90
- Check: Work backwards: 90 ÷ 450 × 100 = 20%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/450, so part = 20 × 450 ÷ 100 = 90. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =20%*450. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
90 is the 20% share of 450. The remaining 80% is 360, and the two parts add back up to 450.
Discounts: 20% off an item priced $450 saves $90, so you pay $360.
Adding and taking away 20%
Increasing 450 by 20% gives 540 and decreasing it by 20% gives 360. These do not cancel out: raising 450 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 432, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.
