How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 30 ÷ 100 = 0.3
  2. Multiply: 0.3 × 250 = 75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 75 ÷ 250 × 100 = 30%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 30/100 = part/250, so part = 30 × 250 ÷ 100 = 75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =30%*250. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

75 is the 30% share of 250. The remaining 70% is 175, and the two parts add back up to 250.

Discounts: 30% off an item priced $250 saves $75, so you pay $175.

Adding and taking away 30%

Increasing 250 by 30% gives 325 and decreasing it by 30% gives 175. These do not cancel out: raising 250 by 30% and then lowering the result by 30% ends at 227.5, because the second 30% is taken of a bigger number.
