How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 21 ÷ 100 = 0.21
  2. Multiply: 0.21 × 26 = 5.46
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.46 ÷ 26 × 100 = 21%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 21/100 = part/26, so part = 21 × 26 ÷ 100 = 5.46. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =21%*26. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.46 is the 21% share of 26. The remaining 79% is 20.54, and the two parts add back up to 26.

Discounts: 21% off an item priced $26 saves $5.46, so you pay $20.54.

Adding and taking away 21%

Increasing 26 by 21% gives 31.46 and decreasing it by 21% gives 20.54. These do not cancel out: raising 26 by 21% and then lowering the result by 21% ends at 24.8534, because the second 21% is taken of a bigger number.
