How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
- Multiply: 0.8 × 85 = 68
- Check: Work backwards: 68 ÷ 85 × 100 = 80%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/85, so part = 80 × 85 ÷ 100 = 68. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =80%*85. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
68 is the 80% share of 85. The remaining 20% is 17, and the two parts add back up to 85.
Discounts: 80% off an item priced $85 saves $68, so you pay $17.
Adding and taking away 80%
Increasing 85 by 80% gives 153 and decreasing it by 80% gives 17. These do not cancel out: raising 85 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 30.6, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.
