How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 21 ÷ 100 = 0.21
  2. Multiply: 0.21 × 7 = 1.47
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.47 ÷ 7 × 100 = 21%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 21/100 = part/7, so part = 21 × 7 ÷ 100 = 1.47. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =21%*7. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.47 is the 21% share of 7. The remaining 79% is 5.53, and the two parts add back up to 7.

Discounts: 21% off an item priced $7 saves $1.47, so you pay $5.53.

Adding and taking away 21%

Increasing 7 by 21% gives 8.47 and decreasing it by 21% gives 5.53. These do not cancel out: raising 7 by 21% and then lowering the result by 21% ends at 6.6913, because the second 21% is taken of a bigger number.
