How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
- Multiply: 0.6 × 70 = 42
- Check: Work backwards: 42 ÷ 70 × 100 = 60%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/70, so part = 60 × 70 ÷ 100 = 42. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =60%*70. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
42 is the 60% share of 70. The remaining 40% is 28, and the two parts add back up to 70.
Discounts: 60% off an item priced $70 saves $42, so you pay $28.
Adding and taking away 60%
Increasing 70 by 60% gives 112 and decreasing it by 60% gives 28. These do not cancel out: raising 70 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 44.8, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
