How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 22 ÷ 100 = 0.22
- Multiply: 0.22 × 20 = 4.4
- Check: Work backwards: 4.4 ÷ 20 × 100 = 22%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 22/100 = part/20, so part = 22 × 20 ÷ 100 = 4.4. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =22%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
4.4 is the 22% share of 20. The remaining 78% is 15.6, and the two parts add back up to 20.
Discounts: 22% off an item priced $20 saves $4.4, so you pay $15.6.
Adding and taking away 22%
Increasing 20 by 22% gives 24.4 and decreasing it by 22% gives 15.6. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 22% and then lowering the result by 22% ends at 19.032, because the second 22% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 20% of 22. 22% of 20 and 20% of 22 are always equal (both are 22 × 20 ÷ 100 = 4.4), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
