How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
- Multiply: 0.2 × 22 = 4.4
- Check: Work backwards: 4.4 ÷ 22 × 100 = 20%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/22, so part = 20 × 22 ÷ 100 = 4.4. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =20%*22. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
4.4 is the 20% share of 22. The remaining 80% is 17.6, and the two parts add back up to 22.
Discounts: 20% off an item priced $22 saves $4.4, so you pay $17.6.
Adding and taking away 20%
Increasing 22 by 20% gives 26.4 and decreasing it by 20% gives 17.6. These do not cancel out: raising 22 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 21.12, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 22% of 20. 20% of 22 and 22% of 20 are always equal (both are 20 × 22 ÷ 100 = 4.4), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
