How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
  2. Multiply: 0.23 × 17 = 3.91
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.91 ÷ 17 × 100 = 23%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/17, so part = 23 × 17 ÷ 100 = 3.91. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =23%*17. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.91 is the 23% share of 17. The remaining 77% is 13.09, and the two parts add back up to 17.

Discounts: 23% off an item priced $17 saves $3.91, so you pay $13.09.

Adding and taking away 23%

Increasing 17 by 23% gives 20.91 and decreasing it by 23% gives 13.09. These do not cancel out: raising 17 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 16.1007, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.
