How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
  2. Multiply: 0.23 × 25 = 5.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.75 ÷ 25 × 100 = 23%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/25, so part = 23 × 25 ÷ 100 = 5.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =23%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.75 is the 23% share of 25. The remaining 77% is 19.25, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 23% off an item priced $25 saves $5.75, so you pay $19.25.

Adding and taking away 23%

Increasing 25 by 23% gives 30.75 and decreasing it by 23% gives 19.25. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 23.6775, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.
